Leren van mislukkingen

7 ideas staat deze week stil bij "mislukkingen". Missers, fouten, blunders spreken tot ieders verbeelding (hoe is het mogelijk dat het zo fout kan gaan?). Maar soms zijn missers noodzakelijk voor innovatie. "Intelligent mislukken" is vaak een opstap voor innovatie. In deze nieuwsbrief 7 invalshoeken hoe mislukken zinvol (of juist niet) kan zijn.

1. Verkeerde voorspellingen.

Als je met nieuwe ideeën komt, staat er vaak en meteen een peloton klaar met "ideakillers" dat jouw idee in de kiem tracht te smoren. Legendarisch zijn de volgende historisch verkeerde voorpellingen. Omgekeerd is het ook natuurlijk leuk om te gaan kijken naar voorspellingen die niet zijn uitgekomen: retrofuture.

2. De mislukte foto's van HEMA

"Mislukte foto's. Je komt ze nog maar weinig in het wild tegen. Want door de oprukkende digitale camera wordt elke onscherpe of onderbelichte opname gewetenloos gewist. En dat vindt HEMA ontzettend jammer. Juist omdat er tussen die mislukte foto's vaak hele grappige of mooie plaatjes zitten. Daarom gaat HEMA met misluktefoto.nl op zoek naar de "Misluktste Foto van Nederland". Mooie vondst ... en uitbreidbaar naar zovele andere sectoren.

3. Rakeling

Een rakeling is een positief woord voor iets nieuws dat je terecht hebt ondernomen maar dat (nog) niet tot het gewenste resultaat heeft geleid.

De redenen dat rakelingen uiteindelijk geen succes zijn geworden, kunnen divers zijn: de omstandigheden zijn veranderd; een betere optie is gekozen; je hebt een fout gemaakt; het lot heeft het anders beslist; er waren opeens andere prioriteiten, enz.

Er is op dit moment geen Nederlands woord voor dit fenomeen. Je hebt het woord mislukking of fout, maar dat klinkt negatief. Een poging, of een initiatief, is pas begonnen. Een rakeling herken je pas als je terugkijkt. Uit een rakeling kun je altijd wijze lessen trekken.

5. Mistakes that worked. 

Mistakes that worked is eigenlijk een kinderboek (alhoewel!) en beschrijft mooie voorbeelden hoe mislukkingen uiteindelijk succesverhalen van productinnovatie werden. De 3M post-its zijn gebaseerd op lijm die niet voldoende plakte, Coca Cola was een experiment met geneesmiddelen ...

6. How Failure Breeds Success

Uit een fogglogje van Richard Stomp, die een artikel in Business Week bespreekt.

Het gaat daarbij niet om alle fouten, maar vooral om intelligent failures -- "those that happen early and inexpensively and that contribute new insights about your customers".
Die fouten zouden niet alleen moeten worden getolereerd, ze zouden zelfs moeten worden aangemoedigd.
"Figuring out how to master this process of failing fast and failing cheap and fumbling toward success is probably the most important thing companies have to get good at," zegt consultant Scott Anthony in het artikel.

"It's only a failure if we fail to get the learning," heet het verderop in het artikel

Het verhaal in Business Week is zeer de moeite waard. Er staan prachtige verhalen in. Drie voorbeeldjes:

• Coke's CEO Neville Isdell begon een jaarlijkse vergadering met investeerders (!) met het tonen van de fouten die zijn bedrijf had gemaakt. "You will see some failures," zei Isdell. "As we take more risks, this is something we must accept as part of the regeneration process." Tegen investeerders!
• Thomas D. Kuczmarski, een new-product development consultant uit Chicago, promoot "failure parties". Feestjes waar de fouten worden gevierd, om zo duidelijk te maken dat ze een essentieel onderdeel zijn van het innovatieproces.
• General Electric organiseert conferenties over de mislukkingen: "imagination breakthroughs that didn't live up to expectations and were being shelved, or "retired" .
